Brought to the United States by Fred Hooper in 1966 at the tender age of 19, Laffit Pincay Jr. wasted no time in making his mark on the American racing scene. His arrival heralded the start of a legendary career that would see him rewrite the record books and etch his name into the annals of horse racing history.
Pincay's transition to American racing was seamless, with immediate success at tracks like Arlington Park, where he won eight of his first 11 mounts. His prowess in the saddle soon became evident as he accumulated an astonishing 9,530 career wins, a record that still stands to this day. Not content with merely winning races, Pincay also became the all-time leader in earnings with an astounding $237,120,625.
Pincay's list of achievements reads like a who's who of horse racing greatness. He captured the Kentucky Derby in 1984 aboard Swale and secured three consecutive Belmont Stakes victories with Conquistador Cielo (1982), Caveat (1983), and Swale (1984). Additionally, Pincay tasted success at the Breeders' Cup, winning seven races including the Classic aboard Skywalker in 1986.
California became Pincay's kingdom, where he reigned supreme at tracks such as Hollywood Park, Santa Anita, and Del Mar. He set records for career wins at each of these iconic venues and amassed an impressive collection of stakes victories, including nine Hollywood Gold Cups, seven Santa Anita Derbies, and five Santa Anita Handicaps.
Pincay's stellar career earned him numerous accolades, including five Eclipse Awards for Outstanding Jockey and seven titles as North America's leading rider in earnings.
